I am my own “FIRST RESPONDER.”
by Candace E. Dainty

There is a humorous pro-gun saying, “I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.” Fact is the police are not required to protect us. Fact is, they are not allowed to do anything until after the fact.  They can’t arrest someone for appearing threatening. They CAN’T protect us. All they can do is investigate AFTER the crime has been committed.

The police, by law can get involved only AFTER some has broken into our house or car or physically made unwelcome contact with our body.

Oh, but you say their mere existence discourages crime. Maybe this is true if you are standing next to them. What about when you are home, in bed, or driving down the road? Most of us can’t bring a cop home with us!

The August, 2009 issue of “American Rifleman” contains, on page 12 an excellent article by Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President.

Titled Standing Guard, the article explains the right to self-defense and the lies the anti-gun liberals and “media elite” will try to feed us when they say, “The government will protect you.”

LaPierre states our response:

“The courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have ruled that government has absolutely no duty, no responsibility to protect individuals from violent criminals!

Take the landmark Warren V. District of Columbia case brought be three young women who had been held prisoner and repeated raped and brutally assaulted for 14 hours by a home invader while their earlier, repeated calls to police for help were ignored.
The court ruled  “…a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide…police protection to any particular individual citizen.””

He goes further to tell us the D.C. Court of Appeals ruled:

“The duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large…and, absent a special relationship between the police and an individual, no specific legal duty exists.”

The true deterrent to crime is a well-trained, armed public, preferably with concealed weapons. Concealed guns protect everyone, even the timid who wouldn’t think of a gun. The mere permission for a law-abiding citizen to conceal a weapon leaves the would-be assailant not knowing WHO is a good victim.

As of today only two states have no concealed carry provision, Wisconsin and Illinois. It is time they understand we, individuals, are our own FIRST RESPONDERS.
